1. Sarnath Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, located near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, has been formally inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea. With this addition, India's tally of World Heritage properties has risen to 45, reinforcing the country's standing as custodian of one of the richest and most diverse cultural landscapes in the world.

• Sarnath is one of the four most important sites of Buddhist pilgrimage, being the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, the Dharmachakra Pravartana, to his five disciples.
• The inscribed property comprises two protected archaeological components, the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath, which include the Dhamek Stupa and the Dharmarajika Stupa, together forming the historic landscape known as Deer Park or Mrigadava.
• The inscription is expected to boost international tourism, strengthen conservation funding, and reinforce India's cultural diplomacy with Buddhist-majority nations under its neighbourhood and Act East outreach.

• The four holy sites of Buddhism are Lumbini for birth, Bodh Gaya for enlightenment, Sarnath for the first sermon, and Kushinagar for mahaparinirvana.

2. Public Examinations Amendment Bill, 2026 and the Nandan Nilekani-led Task Force on Examination Reforms

Against the backdrop of recurring paper-leak controversies in national-level competitive examinations, the government introduced the Public Examinations Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha to strengthen legal safeguards against malpractice. Alongside this legislative move, the Prime Minister announced a six-member high-powered task force headed by technology expert Nandan Nilekani to recommend structural reforms for a transparent, secure, and technologically robust examination ecosystem, including a revamp of the National Testing Agency.

• The Bill amends the Public Examinations Prevention of Unfair Means Act of 2024 and proposes fast-track special courts in every state dedicated exclusively to paper-leak cases, with investigations to be concluded within two months.
• Enhanced punishment provisions include imprisonment of up to ten years and fines of up to fifty lakh rupees for those found guilty of organised cheating or leaking question papers.

3. Corporate Mitra Scheme for MSME Support

Announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, the Corporate Mitra Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs aimed at building a certified cadre of trained paraprofessionals, called Corporate Mitras, who will provide affordable compliance, accounting, taxation, and governance advisory support to India's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

• The scheme is a twelve-month skill and employment programme consisting of six months of structured academic learning of about one hundred fifty hours delivered through the SWAYAM Plus portal, followed by six months of on-the-job training.
• The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has partnered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, and IIT Madras to design and roll out the curriculum.
• In its first phase, the scheme will train two thousand candidates, with two hundred seats reserved for the North-Eastern Region, and a fifty percent fee concession for women candidates and applicants from the North-East, Himalayan states, and island territories.

• MSMEs are classified on the basis of investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover, as per the criteria notified under the MSME Development Amendment Act of 2020.
