National Park vs Wild Life Sanctuary

  • The "Who Creates It" Trap: Both National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are primarily declared by the State Governments. The Central Government can also declare them, but usually only if the land is leased or transferred to the center. (Do not fall for the trap that "National" means only the Central Government creates them).

  • The Biosphere Reserve Overlap: A single Biosphere Reserve can contain multiple National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries within it (e.g., the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve contains Wayanad WLS, Bandipur NP, Mudumalai NP, etc.).

  • The Boundary Rule: The boundaries of a National Park can only be altered by a resolution passed by the State Legislature (not just an executive order by the Chief Minister or a notification by the MoEFCC).
